Funding Opportunities

NIAA Grants Round 2 2014

Round 2 2014 is now open and nine awards are available. The deadline for applications is noon on Friday 26 September and further information about how to apply can be found by clicking here.

All NIAA grants are reviewed by a lay member of the grant panel and this review does have a bearing on the outcome of applications. As Patient & Public Involvement in Research is increasingly becoming a mandatory part of major grant applications, the NIAA's Health Services Research Centre has formed a Patient & Public Involvement Working Group to ensure that researchers can easily access informed and constructive feedback on their proposals. If you don't have any input from a lay person, you may wish to apply for support from the group. You can find out more on our PPI pages.

BJA/NIAA Research Methodology Workshop: 29 September 2014

Meeting cost: £150
Venue: Royal College of Anaesthetists, 35 Red Lion Square, London, WC1R 4SG
CPD points anticipated: 5

Overview

A joint workshop with the British Journal of Anaesthesia and the National Institute of Academic Anaesthesia to introduce participants to the way in which good research should be conducted and presented.

The workshop will be useful for anaesthetists of any grade who are already involved in research or those who are about to embark on a research project. Post FRCA Specialist Registrars and Lecturers will find this meeting to be particularly appropriate to their needs since knowledge of research methodology is one of the non-clinical topics which form an important part of Post FRCA training. Even if actual research is not undertaken it is considered essential for trainees to acquire an understanding of research methodology so that they are able to critically appraise research reports in the literature.

Teaching sessions will address: developing a research idea; study design; project management; analysis; presentation and interpretation of data; dissemination of results.

Group sessions will allow participants to: provide criticism of a published research paper; design a clinical trial; detect common pitfalls in analysis and interpretation of data.

National Emergency Laparotomy Audit

The National Emergency Laparotomy Audit (NELA), part of the National Clinical Audit and Patient Outcomes Programme (NCAPOP) and overseen by the Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership (HQIP), is about to enter the eighth month of the patient data collection process.

The NELA Project Team is incredibly pleased with the audit's progress, and with over 13,000 cases entered and 8,000 completed, 190 out of the 191 participating hospitals have taken part so far.

For further information on the audit please visit the NELA website.

Here you will be able to find the latest copy of a Proforma questionnaire, inclusion/exclusion criteria and FAQs. The website is also home to the NELA Organisational Report published in May 2014, as well as the monthly NELA newsletter where you can find out about the latest NELA activities including talks from NELA speakers. The first of these talks will be from Dr Matt Oliver and will take place on the 12 September in Harrogate.

RCoA DAS Airway Leads

The Royal College of Anaesthetists and the Difficult Airway Society are keen to ensure that the RCoA/DAS Airway Lead role continues to develop. DAS is setting up a members-only area on their website for Airway Leads. In order that only registered Airway Leads can have access to this area, the RCoA will be sharing the names of Airway Leads and their GMC numbers with DAS. We have amended the indicative job description for Airway Leads to reflect this, and it available to view here. We have written to all Airway Leads to ask whether they accept this change and consent to us sharing this information with DAS.

We are keen to know what Airway Leads are doing locally and to share a range of these activities on the RCoA Airway Lead webpage to provide some ideas to other AWLs about what they might want to do and so we are also calling for information on this. Similarly we would like to hear from AWLs who aren't sure what to do.

If you are an Airway Lead and have not received this communication, please let us know.
