NIAA Grants
Results from Round 1 2012
The NIAA received 36 applications over 8 categories in this year's Round 1, for a total sum of £956,380. We were pleased to make eleven awards to the value of £296,875 and you can read more about the successful projects here.
Round 2 2012
Round 2 closed on Friday 28 September and all applications have been sent out for peer review. The Grant Committee will meet at the beginning of December and applicants will be contacted within a week of the meeting.
BJA/RCoA Research Fellowship
The closing date for this £250k career development grant was on Friday 14 September. All applications have been sent out for peer review and the Grant Committee will meet at the beginning of December to assess the applications.
RCoA Small Grants
This year 17 applications were received for the small RCoA grants and four awards were made of between £1,000 and £2,500, along with two awards of £500 each from the Society for Education in Anaesthesia UK (SEA UK). Read more about the successful applications here.
NIAA Events
Academia and Armed Conflict Event
The NIAA is pleased to announce that it will be working with the UK Department of Military Anaesthesia, Pain and Critical Care on the second, 'Academia and Armed Conflict Conference' in May 2013. Please click here for full details.
NIAA presentations at district general hospitals
The first NIAA district general hospital presentation took place on 20 September and we are pleased to say that we have four more in the pipeline scheduled for the run up to Christmas. These will take place at East Surrey; Dumfries & Galloway; Worthing and Bangor. We have a limited number of places available at the talks in Dumfries & Galloway and Worthing and details can be found here.
Partnerships
The Anaesthetic Research Society
The NIAA is pleased to announce that the Anaesthetic Research Society will be taking the lead on the provision of educational events for the NIAA in future. We are working together on a series of events scheduled for autumn 2013 and further details will be announced soon.
NIHR Specialty Group
The Anaesthesia, Peri-operative Medicine and Pain Management Group achieved specialty group of the month status in September and October. Click here to find out more about the group.

Translating Preclinical into Clinical Anaesthesia Research
The aims of this meeting are to promote much needed clinical research in anaesthesia; to demonstrate potential research areas and to encourage collaboration within anaesthesia and the peri-operative community. Please click here for more information and a registration form.
NELA - National Emergency Laparotomy Audit
In July this year, the Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership (HQIP) awarded the contract to run the new National Emergency Laparotomy Audit (NELA) to the Royal College of Anaesthetists. The project will commence on 1 December and will be delivered by the NIAA's Health Services Research Centre with the Royal College of Surgeons' Clinical Effectiveness Unit and the Intensive Care National Audit and Research Centre. QuARCs
The HSRC is working to establish a network of local Quality Audit and Research Coordinators (QuARCs) within every Trust to be a single point of contact for national audits, quality improvement projects, multicentre research and other academic issues. For more information, please click here. We are still missing details for a number of trusts, so if you haven't yet confirmed the details for your QuARC, please do get in touch.
National Audit Projects
NAP5
The fifth National Audit Project on Accidental Awareness during General Anaesthesia is now underway. For more information and for details on how to report a case of AAGA, please click here. Results of a Baseline Survey into incidents of AAGA will be published shortly.
NAP4
One of the key recommendations of the NAP4 report was that each Department of Anaesthesia should have a 'departmental airway lead'. This has been a long-standing recommendation of the Difficult Airway Society (DAS), and the Royal College of Anaesthetists' (RCoA) Council has now endorsed a strong recommendation that all departments should conform. The College is currently compiling a list of Department Airway Leads. An article with further details can be found in:
